Lt. Gen. Thomas Moorman Sr.; Headed Air Force Academy

Lt. Gen. Thomas Moorman Sr., 87, a superintendent credited with helping restore credibility to the Air Force Academy after a cheating scandal in the 1960s. Moorman, the academy’s fifth superintendent and its longest-serving head, took over in 1965 after the scandal resulted in the dismissal of several students. He challenged cadets to reestablish pride, respect and morale, a move that restored stability to the ranks, said Gen. A.P. Clark, the academy’s superintendent from 1970 to 1974. Moorman’s final year as superintendent was 1970, when he retired from the Air Force. In Sterling, Va., on Tuesday.
