Sales will increase only modestly nationwide. The growth in Southern California will be slightly stronger as retailers continue to benefit from an improving regional economy and pent-up demand for home furnishings and apparel. Supermarket consolidation in the Southland is likely to continue because the proposed merger of Ralphs with Fred Meyer and Hughes will probably be approved. Major supermarket chains will offer more services, such as banking, club membership discounts and deli and gourmet departments.
