While Kelly Lynn asks us to “ask any firefighter or paramedic” if SUVs are safer in an accident (letter, Dec. 18), I would like to respectfully point out that these professionals only see the end results of a collision. What they don’t see are the factors that may have led up to the crash. While these lumbering status symbols are indeed the bigger object at impact, their slower steering, tippy ride height and longer stopping distances raise the odds of avoiding the impact in the first place.

Ask an automotive engineer or an instructor of advanced driving skills what type of vehicle is really “safest,” and the answer will certainly not be a sport utility vehicle.
