From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A legislative effort to allow more foreign farm workers into the country is unnecessary because the country has plenty of such workers, according to a government study. The report by the General Accounting Office, requested by Congress, undercuts a push to issue more visas to foreign farm workers, the New York Times reported, citing a draft of the study it had obtained. Farm industry associations have been pushing to expand the number of temporary guest-worker visas, arguing that shortages will increase as the government cracks down on illegal immigrants.
