Ninety-seven Algerian civilians were killed in new massacres at fake roadblocks, in hamlet raids, in a bomb explosion and in other attacks across Algeria, Algerian dailies said Tuesday.

In one incident, attackers cut the throats of 34 villagers--19 women, 11 children ages 1 to 8, and four men--overnight on Sunday and Monday in the hamlet of El Faoudj in the Medea area, 45 miles south of the capital, Algiers, said Le Soir d’Algerie.

More than 65,000 people have been killed in violence in Algeria since early 1992, when the authorities canceled a general election in which radical Islamists had taken a commanding lead.

The latest violence brought to more than 300 the number of civilians killed in the previous six days in massacres and other attacks, according to the newspaper reports.

The government announced only the deaths of 59 people in three massacres, blaming Muslim guerrillas.
