Panel to Administer Tests to Police Chief Candidates

Torrance may have a new police chief by mid-August.

The City Council gave the go-ahead for the Civil Service Commission to administer exams to seven Torrance Police Department officers who applied for the position.

Bill Ghio, the city’s Civil Service administrator, said Monday that the exams will be given during the last two weeks of July. Results should be back by early August.

“We should make an appointment soon after,” City Manager LeRoy Jackson said.

The job has been vacant since former Chief Joseph De Ladurantey retired in mid-May after being on the job for more than five years. De Ladurantey, who previously worked for the Los Angeles Police Department, was considered an outsider by many officers in Torrance.

The city has hoped to hire someone from within the ranks. Three captains and four lieutenants have applied for the chief’s job, which will pay $99,000 to $114,000 a year plus benefits.
