Some tips from the Jewelry Information Center, a New York-based trade group, on finding the right jeweler and what to look for when buying fine jewelry.

* Buy from a trusted jeweler or one that has been recommended.

* Be sure to check whether the jeweler can service your piece after it’s been purchased.

* Ask about the return or exchange policy.

* Don’t be lured by discounts--shop around and compare prices and quality.

* Look for a registered trademark and quality mark.

* Get all the information about the piece you are buying--including weight, cut, clarity and color--detailed on your bill of sale.
