Decency Act

Share

The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the so-called Communications Decency Act was, if not inevitable, absolutely necessary for the preservation of individual freedoms heading into the next millennium (June 27). I applaud the justices, even if this was (or should have been) the easiest decision of their current term. The CDA was such a blatant attempt by Congress to bludgeon to death a new technology that it did not understand, that no other decision was really possible.

I’ve already heard the protests of “but we must protect the children,” but they ring hollow in my ears. Do we really protect the children by stripping them of the rights they will enjoy as adults? Does that make any sense at all?
