Council Votes to Keep Residential Trash Rate

Share

The City Council this week voted to keep the current residential trash rate of $13.96 a month in effect through next July 1.

Finance Director Howard L. Longballa said one reason the city can hold the rate is that county officials reduced the landfill gate fee from $27 a ton to $22 a ton for cities.

For commercial customers, the city’s trash rates will decrease slightly. For example, commercial customers who use 3-yard containers will pay $94.16 a month, a decrease of $1.35.

One reason rates are going down for commercial customers is that a higher volume of commercial trash goes to landfills, whereas residential trash includes recyclable material.

In light of allegations that trash fees were misappropriated by the trash company in Orange, Placentia City Administrator Robert D’Amato reassured the council that an audit of the city’s trash hauler was done a year ago.

“We found everything to be in compliance,” D’Amato said.

D’Amato also said city officials on Monday met with officials from Placentia’s trash hauler, Taormina Industries, and that “we feel very comfortable” with the company’s performance.
