Edmonds Is Disappointed

Jim Edmonds will get an extra three days to rest his aching knees, tight hamstrings and sore shoulder, but he’s not especially happy about it. Edmonds, who underwent an MRI exam on his right knee Wednesday, was not selected to play in Tuesday’s All-Star game.

“It’s a huge honor to be chosen, a big thing to be able to say you made it,” said Edmonds, who was an all-star in 1995, “so I’m a little disappointed. But there are a lot of guys with great numbers who don’t make it.”

Results of Wednesday’s test were “inconclusive,” according to Manager Terry Collins, “so I have to make the next decision.” After watching Edmonds warm up, Collins decided to put him in the designated hitter spot.

Edmonds, who has torn cartilage in his left knee, has been suffering from tendinitis in his right knee. He has remained in the lineup, however, and took a .307 batting average with 49 runs batted in and a team-high 14 home runs into Wednesday night’s game.

“Sure, I can use the three days to rest up,” he said. “I’m sure I could use more than that, but I wouldn’t choose it this way. Making the All-Star team is a really prestigious thing.”

Catcher Todd Greene was all dressed up with nowhere to go Wednesday. Called up from Vancouver as protection in case the MRI on Edmonds’ knee revealed a serious problem, Greene was in uniform and raring to go before the lineup was finally posted.

Greene, who was batting .357 with 25 homers and 75 RBIs in 63 games with the Canadians, hopes he has earned a roster spot with the Angels.

“I think I’ve showed what I can do with the chance to play every day and I’d love to do that here,” he said. “But who are you going to take out of this lineup? I’ll take any role they give me. I just want to stay in the big leagues.”

Greene was activated after the game, when relief pitcher Mike James was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore elbow.

* Update: Watson is 1-3 with an 8.57 earned-run average in four career starts against the Dodgers, but he held the Seattle Mariners to three hits in eight-plus innings in his last start, a 6-1 Angel victory Saturday. At one point, Watson retired 18 batters in a row. Nomo lasted only 4 2/3 innings in his last outing, giving up six runs and two homers Saturday against San Diego. Nomo struck out 11 Angels on June 18 at Dodger Stadium as the Dodgers rallied for three runs against the Angel bullpen and a 7-5 victory.
