Carnival Corp. ended its takeover bid for Celebrity Cruise Lines, saying it will not offer more than rival Royal Caribbean International’s increased proposal that values the transaction at $1.3 billion. . . . Two unions representing about 27,000 workers at General Electric Co. have tentatively agreed on a three-year contract calling for pay raises totaling 8.75%. The unions’ members will vote on the contracts next week. . . . U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle in Raleigh, N.C., ruled that the Food and Drug Administration must approve a generic version of the popular ulcer medication Zantac by Novopharm USA Inc., which has a licensing deal with Zantac maker Glaxo Wellcome. The generic drug is expected to go on sale next week. . . . SBC Communications Inc. is appealing in federal appellate court a decision by federal regulators to deny the company’s bid to offer long-distance telephone service to its customers in Oklahoma. . . . Prudential Insurance Co. of America and two Canadian insurers were sued by Canadian customers who claim they were misled by promises of “vanishing premiums” on life insurance policies. The suit is the latest in a series of legal blows to the largest U.S. insurer. In the U.S., Prudential is settling claims of 1.1 million policyholders who contend they were misled.
