Bottle Rocket Blamed in Fire at Buena Park Home

Illegal fireworks caused heavy damage to a single-family dwelling Friday afternoon, fire authorities said.

A bottle rocket landed on the roof of a house in the 5000 block of Brae Burn Place shortly after noon. It caused extensive damage and forced the couple who live there to seek shelter with relatives.

The fire was brought under control within 13 minutes by the three engine companies that responded, said Capt. Scott Brown of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The structure suffered an estimated $50,000 in damage and about $5,000 in personal property was destroyed. No one was injured.

Authorities did not find the person responsible for the fire.

“This will be our mantra all weekend: Illegal fireworks are illegal and very dangerous,” Brown said.

Anyone found responsible for causing a fire can be assessed the cost of extinguishing it, “which could run into the thousands of dollars,” Brown said.
