County Weighs Plan to Build Park for Skateboarders, Skaters

Two aging tennis courts at La Mirada Regional Park would be converted into a facility for skateboarders and in-line skaters under a proposal being considered by county officials.

La Mirada recently told county Supervisor Don Knabe’s office that the city would build the facility if the county handed over the courts. But City Manager Gary Sloan said liability issues may be an obstacle to the transfer.

While the county worries about the potential for injury claims, he said, La Mirada would either require skaters to sign a form releasing liability or post a sign stating that they enter at their own risk. He noted that proposed state legislation would relax similar skating-related liabilities in public areas.

“It’s a legitimate sport,” Sloan said. “I think it would be a lot safer if we could control where the kids are doing their athletics.”
