Official Quits Amid Blood-Test Probe
The head of the nation’s largest independent blood supplier has resigned amid charges his center tampered with tests for the AIDS virus and other diseases. Dr. John Adamson’s resignation as president of the New York Blood Center comes during a federal investigation into allegations that some laboratory technicians may have cut corners on tests to save money. Government officials have said there is no evidence that public health is threatened. Officials at the center have insisted its blood is free of disease. The center distributes blood to 250 hospitals.
