Charles Lazzaretto

On May 27, our families experienced a horrific tragedy when Officer Charles Lazzaretto was ambushed and killed while conducting an investigation at a warehouse in Chatsworth. While the pain of that loss is still very much with the families, the city and the Glendale Police Department and many others, we soon realized that Chuck’s death was even more profound for the community because he represented all the virtue of public service and law enforcement. Chuck was a great son, brother, dedicated police officer, devoted husband-father and friend to so many. He exemplified the characteristics of intelligence, integrity, courage, compassion and a willingness to sacrifice himself for the good of others.

Our families wish to publicly thank each of you. We are grateful for the thoughtful declarations of sympathy and support as expressed by telephone calls, Mass and sympathy cards, letters, flowers, food and donations to the Lazzaretto Memorial Fund. This has provided all family members with great comfort during this time of sorrow.

Our communities have responded to Chuck’s sacrifice in so many ways, and it has drawn all of us closer, rallying support and expressing sympathy. This is truly a wonderful community and it has been clearly demonstrated by the outpouring of support for his wife, Annamaria, and their two sons, Andrew, 3, and Matthew, 2, and for the Glendale Police Department.

We hope our communities will continue to work together to celebrate goodness and build a better future for all children. We are reminded of the words of John Donne, a 1600s priest who said, “Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. No man is an island, entire of itself.” We thank you for your kindness, thoughts, expressions of condolence, support, affection and concern.
