Lawyers, Citadel Go to Court to Settle Bill

Lawyers who fought to get female students admitted to The Citadel now will fight with the state military school over millions in legal fees run up during the five-year battle. The lawyers who challenged the college’s all-male admissions policy want $6.7 million. The Charleston school says the attorneys are billing for “grossly duplicative and excessive hours” at rates of up to $450 an hour. The school’s lawyers are expected to argue at a U.S. District Court hearing today that the attorneys are entitled to nothing because a Supreme Court ruling, not lawsuits, led to the change.
