Orbiting Crew Will Talk With Students
They may wonder how astronauts deal with medical emergencies in space, what they eat and what kind of schooling is needed to pursue a career in space exploration.
On Wednesday morning, local students will take their queries to the source.
The crew of the Columbia Space Shuttle--one week into its 16-day mission--will converse via radio with 10 to 11 students from Oxnard and Woodland Hills during an event open to the public.
Four Square Radio Amateur Youth, an Oxnard-based club started two years ago for radio enthusiasts, will stage the event at the Oxnard High School auditorium, 3400 W. Gonzalez Road, between 7 and 8 a.m.
The conversation will be relayed via phone and radio lines as well as a linkup between Houston’s Johnson Space Center and the orbiting shuttle. Students involved with the radio club will be able to ask the seven-member crew about their lives as astronauts.
The crew has been on a mission to study fire, plants and metals while orbiting Earth, and plans to land July 17.
