Sewer Improvement Tax Goes Up 15.9%

Share

Residents and business owners in western Camarillo will be paying higher sewer improvement taxes this year than last.

The 15.9% increase translates to an additional $162 per household in the Spanish Hills area and $728 per business in the Camarillo Town Center and the Factory Outlet Center. The increase brings this year’s tax to $1,178 per household and $5,312 per business.

The tax will pay debt service on nearly $14 million in Mello-Roos bonds issued in 1990 to build a sewer line from the new developments to the treatment plant, said Anita Bingham, finance director.

“Otherwise, they wouldn’t have a sewer there,” Bingham said. “And even if there was anything there, it definitely wasn’t adequate to support that kind of development.”

Last year’s levy was reduced due to surpluses that had accumulated in the bond fund. This year’s levy is more typical of what is required annually to meet debt service, Bingham said.

The sewer assessment will be collected as usual in December and April.
