Schools May Offer Classes for Parents

Parents would have classes of their own to attend later this year under a plan to promote community involvement in the public schools.

The Santa Ana Parent Academy, to be considered by school district trustees today, would use $140,500 in state money to offer the free, voluntary sessions, officials said.

The academy would start at the same time as the 1997-98 school year and would supplement existing programs aimed at increasing parental involvement across Santa Ana Unified School District, officials said.

It would consist of workshops to build leadership skills, twice-yearly issues forums and an annual conference expected to attract as many as 1,500 participants, according to a staff report.

School board member Robert W. Balen said the academy would be beneficial because parents who are more involved in the school district can better help their children.

“The school system is a mystery to a lot of parents,” he said. The academy, he said, would be “a way to reach out to them.”

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. at district headquarters, 1601 E. Chestnut Ave.
