5 Elementary Schools to Get New Principals

New principals are expected to be appointed to five elementary schools Wednesday by trustees of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

The board will announce the new heads of Whittier Elementary School, Pomona Elementary School, Paularino Elementary School, Davis School and Kaiser Elementary School. All five schools are in Costa Mesa.

The board also is scheduled to consider a resolution defending its use of a federal grant to support local “school-to-work” programs. Newport-Mesa uses the money to fund vocational programs designed to help students identify their academic goals by introducing them to the working world.

But some members of the county educational board, which oversees county-run educational programs, have criticized such efforts, saying they detract from traditional academics.

Board of Education President Martha Fluor asked that the resolution be considered because she wants the county board to know not everyone agrees with them.

The board meets at 6 p.m. at Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa. Information: (714) 760-3500.
