Arbitration

Share

Your July 2 editorial criticized the arbitration process used to resolve legal disputes at Kaiser Permanente. We take the criticism seriously and are working to make the arbitration process as rapid and fair as possible. Even before the June 30 California Supreme Court ruling, we were committed to reducing the time involved to reach resolution.

Arbitration remains a good option for Californians. It is less costly for all parties and generally less time-consuming than the court system. We agree with your editorial that “it is important that the process be perceived as fair.” In health care the bond of trust between patient and caregiver is essential. Our health plan was founded on the premise of never putting financial interests before the good of our members. We hold that value as strongly today.

Our sympathy goes out to the Engalla family. We will continue to evaluate the arbitration process at Kaiser Permanente and if revisions are warranted, we will take appropriate action.
