Workshop Helps Educators Learn to Incorporate Arts in Classroom

Share

More than 100 elementary, middle, and high school teachers from around the county are participating in the Los Angeles Music Center’s annual Institute for Educators this week.

The institute’s five days of workshops are designed to instruct teachers on using the arts to teach students about traditionally non-artistic subjects, such as history, science, reading and math.

Music Center officials gave the teachers at the workshops high praise for their commitment to education.

“Many teachers are burnt-out and need the summer for themselves,” said Barbara Leonard, artistic director of the Music Center’s education division. “But these teachers are open to new creative ideas that can inspire and transform.”

Program officials say their goal is to develop and extend participants’ understanding of dance, drama, music and the visual arts as a basis for increasing personal knowledge and implementing arts education programs with children.
