Police Close Campus, Clash With Students
Authorities closed the University of Nairobi amid violent clashes with hundreds of students supporting opposition demands for constitutional changes before elections later this year. Witnesses said scores of students were wounded at the main campus in Nairobi, the capital, as heavily armed riot police stormed classrooms and dormitories. The crackdown was to stop students’ plans to rally for democratic reforms, protest tuition hikes and mourn at least seven demonstrators killed in clashes with police nationwide Monday.
