Day Labor Site Feted

While some cities have banned day laborer hiring centers, the Valley’s only job site celebrated its seventh anniversary Saturday with music, dancing and food. Pablo Alvarado, project director of the North Hollywood Day Laborer Program, said about 100 laborers visit the site at 11841 Sherman Way each day. Santa Clarita recently refused to set up a hiring site, but Alvarado said the North Hollywood center has helped employers and job seekers, who make a quicker adjustment to American life than those who solicit on street corners, thanks to literacy and English classes at the center.
