Money Speaks Louder

I agree 100% with Mel Donalson (“It’s Time to Move Beyond ‘Shaft’ and ‘Mack,’ ” Counterpunch, July 7).

It’s time to reveal scientifically the real stories about African American heroes, legends, inventors, historians, athletes and even the 20th century mobsters.

It’s not the studio’s fault that we’re not seeing more quality African American films.

It is because African Americans do not have the togetherness, the financing and the businesslike attitude to come together and solve this historical void.

We have access to everything we need to become successful feature film and television producers, except the money. That is the bottom line.

When I was a steward with the producers association of Hollywood, we conversed about the lack of African American roles in films and television production, story line, stereotypes, racism, multicultural employment, race relations and distribution. The one thing we did not talk about was the money.

Show me the money. I will show you the quality, magnificent and wonderful feature film product with cinematic importance that will inspire both black and nonblack audiences.
