Parental smoking is causing the deaths of at least 6,200 children a year in the U.S., deaths linked to sudden infant death syndrome, lung infection and burns, among other smoking-related causes, according to a University of Wisconsin Medical School study reported in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The study estimated that 5.4 million other children each year survive ailments triggered by parental smoking. Another study described in the publication found that boys born to women who smoked during pregnancy are more likely to experience “conduct disorders.”
