Developer Wants to Add Golf Course

A Malibu developer that already has county approval to build a golf driving range in the Tierra Rejada Valley has announced that it wants to build an 18-hole public golf course and practice range between Moorpark and Simi Valley.

Crumpler & Kruger Commercial Real Estate has filed an application with the Ventura County Planning Department to build a golf course and unlighted practice range on 183 acres at the northeast intersection of the Moorpark Freeway and Tierra Rejada Road. The company hopes that county officials will approve modification of the original permit to allow adding the 18-hole golf course, complete with pro shop and other amenities.

“Right now, the golf courses that are in operation in Simi and Thousand Oaks are operating at capacity,” said Elaine Freeman, a consultant on the project. “Tierra Rejada Golf Club is in a centralized location that will be able to service golfers in Moorpark, Thousand Oaks and Simi.”

The 72-par championship course is being designed by Robert E. Cupp of Atlanta-based Cupp Design and measures 7,028 yards from the championship tees.

Cupp has gained international recognition for the more than 150 golf courses he has designed, including Pumpkin Ridge in Cornelius, Ore.

Cupp, who designed the Spanish Hills golf course in Camarillo, was named Golf World’s 1992 Designer of the Year and has been awarded 11 Best New Course titles. His courses have been the site of more than 50 PGA tournaments and the Nike tour.

The land on which the course is proposed to be built was used as a motorcycle racing track about 20 years ago.
