Alfred M. Boyce; Retired UC Riverside Dean, Pesticide Expert

Alfred M. Boyce, 96, retired dean of the College of Agriculture at UC Riverside and a pioneer in fighting fruit fly infestations. Boyce also served as director of the University of California’s Citrus Experiment Station and was affiliated with the UC system for 70 years. His research specialty was developing and evaluating new pesticides. In 1951, Boyce traveled for a year in the Far East, Middle East and Africa to find parasites and predators of a scale insect that was a serious threat to California’s olive crop. In 1956, he served as acting provost at UC Riverside. He is survived by two sons, Allen, of Coronado, and Barry, of Garden Grove; a daughter, Karen Risher of Poway; and two grandchildren. On Friday of cancer at his home in Riverside.
