Tax Cut Will Aid U.S. Women, House GOP Says
House Republicans called their tax bill a boon for American women at home and in the workplace, enlisting a newly promoted female party leader to support the claim.
“The only people who think this tax-relief bill is not good for women are those who don’t believe we women can manage our own money. And that thinking is certainly passe,” said Rep. Jennifer Dunn (R-Wash.) in the Republicans’ radio address Saturday.
Dunn said the Republican tax bill “helps women throughout their lives both at home and in the job market.”
Mothers would benefit from a $500-per-child tax credit, “money that can be used to pay for school clothes, or groceries, or the often-unexpected expenses that come with raising children,” Dunn said.
Better options for retirement savings through expanded IRAs will also help women who “live longer than men, yet . . . generally have less savings set aside,” Dunn said.
Dunn combated Democrats’ accusations that the Republican tax plan helps mainly the rich, countering that 76% of cuts would go to taxpayers making less than $75,000 a year.
“No longer will women be forced to leave their children at home to go to work to help pay the family’s tax bill,” Dunn said.
