Gallegos’ Record

In your July 11 editorial, “Beyond Mere Words,” statements were made that would lead your readers to think that I am somehow the captive of tobacco interests. Also, you questioned my integrity and sincerity as to my concern for the health of Californians.

Let’s deal with the tobacco issue first. My voting record shows that I have consistently voted in favor of measures that protect individuals from the negative effects of tobacco products. Most recently I voted in favor of AB 1603, which allowed the state to join a federal lawsuit to recover costs incurred by treating tobacco-related illnesses. I voted for SB 67, which removed the exemption tobacco companies had with regard to product liability. And I voted for ACR 4, calling for the elimination of the Joe Camel ad campaign.

In addition, I am supportive of SB 340, which provides legal recourse for individuals who are impacted by the effects of secondhand smoke.

As far as my concern for the health of Californians and their ability to have access to quality health care, my efforts in that arena, as chair of the Assembly Health Committee, are well documented.

I realize that I am viewed as a politician first and a human being second. But not all politicians fit the stereotype, and not all deserve the disdain with which we are often regarded.
