The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is sending $17.8 million in grants to central Orange County for housing rehabilitation and cleanup, benefiting programs in Anaheim, a new recreation center in Santa Ana and funding student programs at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana.

The grants, announced Monday by Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove), include an additional $7 million for emergency shelter programs and housing for people with AIDS.

Santa Ana will receive the most--$11.5 million--including $8.4 million in housing funds. The county will get $7 million, with $5.7 million for housing. About $6 million will go to Anaheim, with $4.7 million for housing.

Santa Ana plans to use part of its grant money for the design and construction of the Delhi Park Recreation Center.

In other grants announced Monday, Orange County Superior Court will receive $400,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice for an intervention program for drug defendants.

The county had applied three times unsuccessfully for the federal funding, and the program was partially funded in the past by city and state grants.

“The Orange County drug court program has an excellent record of success in helping graduates of the program make the difficult transition from a life of drug addiction and crime to a new life as productive members of our community,” Sanchez said.
