A Ku Klux Klan group is threatening to sue the state because it refuses to let the racist organization adopt a highway.

Florida’s Department of Transportation turned down the klan’s offer to clean up trash along State Road 415, citing safety concerns.

“Really, we’re just like the Lions or the Elks,” Jeff Coleman, grand wizard of the Royal Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, said Monday. “We want to be involved in the community.” The klan enlisted the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union in its effort to get its name on a roadside sign.

Until then, Coleman said, he has been out picking up trash in his ceremonial white robe, just so people will know who he is. If he gets the sign, he will leave the robe at home. “We don’t want to pick up a beer can or something and spill it on our robes,” he said.
