A man operating a backhoe on a country road northwest of Santa Paula was trapped for more than 30 minutes when the machine flipped over Tuesday afternoon.

David Dixon, 55, of Santa Paula was operating the backhoe about 2 p.m., about a quarter of a mile past the end of Wheeler Canyon Road when it slid, then tipped over and trapped him, county law enforcement officials said.

Rescue workers from the Ventura County Fire Department and California Highway Patrol freed Dixon, who was flown to Ventura County Medical Center, according to the CHP.
