A typhoon dumped rain and whipped up seas in southwestern Japan on Saturday, forcing hundreds from their homes and leaving at least four people dead.

Power failures, landslides and flooding were reported in much of the nation as Typhoon Rosie hit the eastern side of Shikoku island with winds of up to 89 mph.

The slightly weakened storm then lashed the southern coast of Honshu with winds of up to 78 mph, meteorologists said.
