WASHINGTON — The Air Force suspended flights in the T-3A “Firefly” training aircraft pending an investigation into an unexplained mishap in Colorado.
There are 110 T-3A aircraft in the Air Force--57 assigned to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, and 53 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The single-engine, propeller-driven planes have flown in the Air Force since 1994.
On July 23 the engine of a T-3A inexplicably stopped during a training flight in Colorado, the Air Force said. The instructor pilot landed the plane safely.
