Dana Point Girls’ Soccer Team in U.S. Nationals

The Southern California Blues girls’ club soccer team from Dana Point is among the 20 girls’ and 20 boys’ teams preparing for the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, which begin Wednesday in Phoenix.

The Blues, coached by Rich Manning, meet the Texas Longhorns from Richardson, at 8 a.m. Thursday in the semifinals of the under-19 division at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex. The division’s championship game is 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 on a delayed basis.

The Blues advanced to the championships by defeating the San Diego Surf, 2-0, on June 28 in the Far West Regionals at West Jordan, Utah.

Competition takes place in each of five age groups for boys and girls: under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-20. Nationwide, more than 7,000 teams and 130,000 players participated in this year’s competition.

Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach has been selected by the United States Golf Assn. as the site for the 2000 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur championship.

The event, which is open to players 25 or older, will be held Oct. 3-8.

The course opened in 1971 and was designed by Robert Muir Graves. Big Canyon has hosted several tournaments, including the 1996 Pacific 10 championship won by Tiger Woods when he was attending Stanford, and the 1989 Big West championship.
