Newman Studio furnishings put the focus on Hollywood style of the ‘20s and ‘30s.

“When I watch old movies, I always look at the furniture in the background,” says designer Mark Newman.

This look of Newman’s works, one of elegance and ease, is exemplified in his three-panel screen and Normandie dining chair.

The screen ($4,250) shows Newman’s careful attention to the interplay of natural grain patterns. The screen, quite sturdy despite its tapered legs, is available in several finishes--light or dark Ceruse oak, Nubian oak, red or brown mahogany and walnut. It is 54 inches wide and 72 inches tall.

The chair ($1,425), which has a Lord & Taylor styling, has a simple, yet elegant profile. The hand-fluted leg and single-button back add detail and interest to the chair. Leg finishes include natural maple, satin black or ivory and red or brown mahogany.

The Newman Studio collection, which has more than 100 pieces, is available at Mandel & Co., Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose Ave., Suite B471, in Los Angeles. Call (800) 871-7701 for more information.

Deck the Halls

Get your holidays off to a merry start with Department 56’s national decorating event, which will help you turn your house and Ronald McDonald’s house into homes for the holidays.

Department 56, makers of lighted villages and other collectibles, has teamed with more than 4,000 retailers nationwide to provide decorating inspiration through seminars, in-store displays and a free holiday idea guide to raise funds for three Ronald McDonald houses.

The event, which starts today and concludes Nov. 9, will benefit the Ronald McDonald houses in Orange, Loma Linda and Los Angeles.

During the nine days, Department 56 will introduce the Original Snow Village and Dickens’ Village Series, all-in-one holiday scenes for decorating or gift-giving.

In Full Bloom

Bring a little nature to the table with Tiffany’s newest additions to its bone china collection.

Setting things off is the Blue and White pieces, which were inspired from Japanese renderings that were found in Tiffany & Co.’s archives. Refined for the ‘90s, the line is complemented by Classic Blue china, a blue-rimmed collection, which is simple and timeless.

The Tiffany Nature dinner plates ($220 for a set of four) were inspired by the beauty of flowers cut at their peak.

All of the pieces in the collection are microwave safe, and can be put in the dishwasher.

They are available at Tiffany & Co., South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.
