Panel Will Form to Help Update Plan for Historic Los Rios District

Share

Should the city take commercial traffic off Los Rios Street? And what should be done about tourists dodging cars because there are no sidewalks in the 200-year-old neighborhood?

To guide growth in the historic Los Rios District, the City Council voted 4 to 0 this week to form a seven-member advisory committee to help update a planning document known as the Los Rios Precise Plan. Councilman Gil Jones, a Los Rios resident, abstained from the vote.

The original plan, adopted in 1978, has been amended five times in 19 years. Warnings from residents and preservationists against district commercialization prompted the current move for another revision.

The original plan, two years in the making, was based on input from a committee including Los Rios residents. Changes in state law now require committee members to be selected from residents outside the area. The new committee will include Councilman John Greiner, Mayor David M. Swerdlin, two planning commissioners and one member each from three other city commissions.
