Tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus. Grapes and pomegranates. And beaucoup herbs. All organically grown, of course--and all found at farmers markets throughout the L.A. area.

But first, the flowers--glorious blooming bunches of them. After all, it’s only natural.

Whether on a fruit tree, a plant or all alone, “the flower blooms and dies and from that we get the seeds that grow into food,” says Brian Sullivan, a gardener at La Canada’s Descanso Gardens and frequenter of farmers markets, where flowers are a must-buy.

For sure, people come to the open-air markets for the plump veggies and the luscious fruit that provide nourishment for their bodies.

But the farmers’ flora is hard to resist because, says Sullivan, “flowers are nourishment for one’s mind and soul. For one’s heart.”
