Council OKs $5,000 for Park Planning

Share

The City Council voted this week to spend $5,000 on plans for a park at the spot where the Santa Ana River meets the Pacific Ocean.

The idea to build a park at the river’s edge was brought to the council by Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks. The group is headed by Jean Watt, an environmentalist and former city councilwoman, and is devoted to preserving open space in Newport Beach.

The group also has asked Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa and Orange County to pledge funds for the park. Those government entities will vote on the proposal in the coming weeks.

Newport Beach’s contribution, approved on Monday, is valid only if Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa and the county help pay for the planning.
