Q: Why can we see better when we squint or look through a pinhole?

A: Squinting or looking through a small hole can improve the focus of an image by blocking all but the most central or primary light rays, according to Dr. Steven Schwartz, an ophthalmologist at UCLA. These rays require the least amount of focusing by the eye, so the image will appear sharper to someone with poor vision. It will also appear smaller.
