County Builds Sand Berms to Protect Against Storms

Share

The Los Angeles County Fire Department began constructing sand berms Wednesday to protect structures on city-owned beaches from damage during potentially severe winter storms, a city official said.

Areas that experienced flooding during heavy winter storms in 1982-83 will be protected by a 12-foot wall of sand, said Santa Monica Beach manager Judith Meister.

Over the next two weeks, bulldozers will be used to construct a berm from the Santa Monica Pier to Bay Street. Between Bay Street and Navy Street, which is Santa Monica’s southern border, horseshoe-shaped berms will surround all restroom and concessions buildings, Meister said.

By the end of the week, the county Department of Beaches and Harbors will complete sand berms to protect Venice, Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey beaches, said Ken Johnson, the department’s chief of community services.
