Fit for a tie: An NAIA independent for most of its 35-year existence, Cal Lutheran can clinch a tie for its first conference football title with a victory over visiting Claremont-Mudd in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finale Saturday.

The Kingsmen (4-4, 3-1) have not won a SCIAC title since joining the conference in 1992 and never won while in the Western Football Conference from 1985-1988. Cal Lutheran is tied for first with Redlands and Whittier.

Cropping up: Former La Canada High standout Jason Cropley has helped the Maryland men’s soccer team into this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference postseason tournament in Orlando, Fla.

The fourth-seeded Terrapins (13-4-1, 3-2-1 in conference) play fifth-seeded Clemson today.

Cropley, who helped La Canada win section titles in 1995 and 1996, is tied for second on the team in scoring with 14 points and in goals with five.
