In the latest of a series of major contracts announced this year, Tandberg Data in Simi Valley said Compaq Computer Corp. has agreed to offer Tandberg’s SLR5 tape drive on a series of Compaq servers.

Compaq, which will call the product the 4/8 GB SLR tape drive, will offer the product as an option for the entry-level server and workstation markets. The SLR5 tape drive, which began shipping in May, is Tandberg’s latest addition to its SLR family of products.

A server is a computer capable of storing large amounts of data to which a number of personal computers are connected.

Available immediately, the 4/8 GB SLR tape drive may be obtained through Compaq distribution channels. It will support the Compaq ProSignia 200, ProLiant 800, ProLiant 850R Non-Hotplug and the ProLiant 1200 servers, as well as the Professional Workstation 5000 series.

“Tandberg Data has shipped more than 1 million tape drives during the last three years, and our reported failure rate has been 1% on these drives,” said Richard Severa, vice president of sales.

Tandberg Data, based in Simi Valley, is a subsidiary of Tandberg Data ASA of Oslo, Norway. Besides Compaq, major customers include Acer, Data General, Digital Equipment Corp., IBM, Lucent Technologies, NCR and Sun Microsystems.
