House Panel Bars Release of Voter List

Share

The House Oversight Committee has blocked release of a list of 4,700 suspected illegal voters in last year’s Orange County election.

In a letter to Orange County Registrar of Voters Rosalyn Lever, the panel’s lawyer argued that the list Lever received from the oversight committee two weeks ago is confidential and was only on loan to her office, therefore exempting it from California’s Public Records Act.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove), whose 984-vote victory over Republican Robert K. Dornan is the subject of the oversight panel investigation, had requested a copy of the list.

Lever said Monday that she had given the list back to the oversight committee and therefore cannot release it.

Jason Poblete, a spokesman for the oversight committee, said that congressional staffers are still in Orange County, photocopying voter registration affidavits from Lever’s office, as part of the investigation.
