School Officials to Discuss Crisis Preparedness

Share

More than 75 Los Angeles County school administrators and counselors will meet in Downey today for a special workshop on coping with a crisis on campus.

The workshop will provide training on what to do when a natural disaster or act of violence strikes, and how school leaders can help students and staff members overcome the fear and disorientation that are natural responses.

“Several weeks ago we had a girl shot at John Glenn High School in Norwalk,” said Bill Ybarra of the county office of education’s safe schools center. “This workshop will discuss how to deal with parents, the community and the press, and how to help kids with their grief.”

Ybarra said the goal of the training is to teach school officials to be proactive and to minimize dangers on campus.

The event, hosted by the county office of education and the Southern California Red Cross, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Commercial Auditorium of the Gas Co.’s Energy Resource Center at 9240 E. Firestone Blvd.
