Campaign Reform
If you are looking forward to serious campaign finance reform, forget it. Even though Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott says the Senate will take it up next March and President Clinton and several ex-presidents have made politically correct supporting statements, it is not likely to happen.
Why? All the key players, the ones with clout, like it just fine the way it is. The politicians, particularly the incumbents, like it. Even challengers like it. Political consultants and fund-raisers live on it. The networks and print media like it: It is good business for them. Corporations and union leaders like it--though many union members may not. Special interest organizations like it.
It is only we the people who have a gripe. It is our money being used to influence the way our country is to be run. But nothing will change until substantially more than half of us decide to become active participants in our democratic process.
