Seminars to Explore Issues for Landlords

Share

Does a landlord have the right to evict a convicted sex offender if his presence in the apartment building scares away prospective tenants?

That is the kind of question that will be answered Thursday during a seminar at the annual trade show of the Apartment Assn. of Van Nuys.

Apartment building owners and management company representatives will assemble to discuss policy and legal issues facing the industry at the event, which will take place at the Airtel Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Van Nuys from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“There are a lot of mama and poppa owners of apartment buildings in the Valley who have owned these buildings for years,” said Marvin Fleschman, a member of the association’s board of directors.

“Laws change, times change, neighborhoods change; these owners need to know how they can conduct their businesses in today’s market.”

The free show will offer five seminars, on such topics as “Employment Do’s and Don’ts,” “Safeguarding Your Investment” and “Practicing Safe [Tenant] Screening.”

More than 60 exhibitor booths will display the latest in products and services for the rental housing industry, and several guest speakers will lecture about improvement in the market and the downward trend in the apartment vacancy rate.

The event is open to the public, including property owners who do not belong to the 1,500-member association.

“Most people in the business don’t know the answers to a lot of the questions we’ll be exploring,” said Fleschman.

“It’s hard to let a free education like this pass you by.”

The Apartment Assn. is a nonprofit group serving members in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, as well as Ventura County.
