Residents Are Asked to Help Clean Up Park

Officials from the San Fernando Department of Recreation and Community Services are asking residents to lend a hand Saturday as they spruce up Las Palmas Park as part of Community Pride Day.

“We’re going to focus on the tot lot this year,” said recreation coordinator Nicole De La Cerda, referring to the children’s playground area. “We try to do it every couple of years to keep it looking nice for the kids. It’s kind of a tradition.”

Adult volunteers are needed to help sand and refinish wooden equipment in the play area, De La Cerda said, and children will be asked to paint their own designs on the park’s metal trash cans.

“Painting the trash cans helps them to develop a sense of pride in the park. They can show their friends, ‘See that trash can over by the bathrooms, that one is mine,’ ” De La Cerda said.

The city will provide paint and other supplies necessary for the work but volunteers are welcome to bring their own equipment, officials said.

After the cleanup, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the recreation and community services department will hold a free barbecue for volunteers. Las Palmas Park is at 505 S. Huntington St. To sign up, or for more information, call (818) 898-1290.
