AIDS Group Settles Suit Over Magazine Story

AIDS Project Los Angeles has settled a $10-million lawsuit that the organization filed against the founder of one of its major fund-raising events.

The suit was filed over a magazine story that appeared last year by Michael Anketell in which he offered a gossipy behind-the-scenes account of the organization’s 1993 fashion fund-raiser. The organization charged that the story--part of a book Anketell was writing about his years as the annual event’s chief organizer--was wildly inaccurate and defamatory.

Now, neither side is talking.

“I think both sides are pleased that it’s over,” said Anketell’s attorney, Bruce Robertson. Robertson and the organization’s attorney, Kevin James, declined to reveal terms of the settlement, saying that it is confidential.
